Digital Camera Lens
50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC
OS HSM

Telephoto lens for digital SLR cameras housed in a compact construction and incorporating Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabiliser) function.

- - -

This telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabiliser) function making hand-held telephoto photography a reality. SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and the inner focusing system provide high definition and the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), ensuring a quiet and high speed AF.

Excellent optical performance
SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and the inner focusing system provide excellent correction for all type of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range.

Telephoto zoom lens with a compact construction
The lens has a compact construction with an overall length of 102.2mm (4.0") and a maximum diameter of 74.4mm (2.9"). It is ideal for many situations such as landscape and general photography.

SIGMA's own unique OS (Optical Stabiliser) technology
This lens is equipped with Sigma's own unique OS function. This system offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. It also compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subjects such as motor sports. The OS function can be also used for Sony and Pentax mount. As compensation for camera shake is visible in the viewfinder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement.
· It is not possible to use the built-in OS function of this lens, when using with Pentax ist* series and K100D DSLR cameras.

Quiet and fast AF
The incorporation of HSM and an inner focusing system provide fast and quiet auto-focusing.
· AF will not function with Pentax camera bodies that do not support HSM.

High contrast image quality
The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and ensures high contrast image quality throughout the entire zoom range.

Ideal for use with polarising filters
The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system which eliminates front lens rotation. This makes the lens particularly suitable for using a circular polarizing filter.

Close focusing capability
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 110cm (43.3") throughout the entire zoom range, and has maximum magnification of 1:4.5, making it ideal for close-up photography.

* Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

PhotoPlus
’The icing on the build quality cake is that this is the only lens in the group to feature internal focusing, so the overall length of the lens doesn’t increase or decrease through the focusing range and, crucially, the front element doesn’t rotate, which is a big bonus if you’re using a rotation-sensitive filter such as a circular polariser. Compared with Sigma’s older and much more basic 55-200mm lens, this version gives far better sharpness and contrast, along with less colour fringing.’

Digital Photo
’Once unpacked the first thing that strikes you is the top-notch black matt finish we’re used to seeing on Sigma’s EX range. Build quality is solid too, with a smooth action on both the zoom and focus rings, and this all adds up to a robust lens.’

Digital Camera
’Quiet, accurate and fast, Sigma’s HSM autofocus system is a joy to use. Along with effective optical stabilisation, it shows that Sigma can match camera manufacturers own lens technology. In our tests, the extremely quiet Sigma OS system gave a fairly consistent four-stop benefit.’

Digital SLR
’On top of that, it also uses internal focusing. This means the lens barrel doesn’t rotate during focusing, which can be very handy for those who use filters. Despite this level of features, it’s both small and lightweight with a smooth zoom control and large manual focusing ring. There’s much to like about the lens’ picture taking performance as well.'

What Digital Camera
’Sigma’s list price for this lens is £300 but it is commonly sold for around half that sum or less, which makes it an absolute bargain if it is as good as it looks on paper. Overall this is clearly an impressive lens – especially given its remarkably low price. Given that field and technical testing proves this really is the absolute bargain it looks on paper, users who can live with without a wide maximum [aperture] would be well advised to consider Sigma’s 50-200mm zoom as a compact yet very capable general purpose lens.'
