Zoom Lens
50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM
High
Magnification Ultra Telephoto Zoom Lens, with a 10x zoom ratio from 50mm
to 500mm, optimized for digital SLR cameras.
This high zoom ratio lens is optimized for digital SLR cameras and capable
of covering a wide range of focal lengths from 50mm standard to 500mm
ultra telephoto.

This ultra-zoom lens employs
a seven-group zoom system, which provides a high zoom magnification of
10x. Triple-cam Rear Focusing System ensures high precision throughout
the whole focus range. The new lens coating reduces flare and ghost, which
is a common problem of digital cameras and also creates an optimum colour
balance.
It
is possible to reach 1000mm focal length by using the Sigma 2X Apo Tele
Converter
By attaching the 2X APO EX Tele-Converter, this lens can be used as a
200-1000mm/F10.4-12.6 manual focus zoom lens, while maintaining a very
compact size for 1000mm focal length. It is also possible to use AE (Automatic
Exposure) function, when EX Tele-converters are attached.
The APO lens corrects chromatic aberrations
An apochromatic lens, which keeps color aberration to a minimum, using
Special Low Dispersion (SLD) or Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass
is called an APO series lens at Sigma.
This lens uses four pieces of SLD (the special low dispersion) glass for
excellent correction of chromatic aberration. High optic performance is
demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range.
HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor)
The HSM models (the HSM is only available for Canon, Nikon, Sigma and
Four Thirds Mounts) provide quiet high-speed AF function, as well as full
time manual focus capability.
Easy Operation and Handling
This lens also features a Zoom Lock device to eliminate "Zoom Creep"
when the lens is tilted down. When the lens is set to the 50mm focal length,
it is remarkably compact and provides easy handling. The tripod mount
is composed of magnesium, to minimize total weight and also it is easy
to grip and carry the lens due to ergonomic design of the tripod mount.
Non-rotating front lens elements, due to rear focus mechanism make possible
the use of a custom bayonet "Petal-type Hood", which prevents
extraneous light from degrading the image quality. This mechanism also
allows the use of circular polarizing filters, since the front barrel
does not rotate during focusing or zooming.

Ephotozine
- December 2005
‘The ability of this lens to frame subjects with all their
surroundings as well as an ability to pick out distant objects without
moving your feet or changing lenses does have its attractions. The
enormous standard to ultra-telephoto range of the lens, along with
a decent performance and almost total lack of distortion makes this
one well worth considering. If you are travelling and don’t
want a sack-full of lenses it becomes almost indispensable!’ |

Monthly - July 2007
‘This alternative superzoom has a solid feel to it. Autofocus,
with the HSM motor, is quiet and surprisingly quick given the scope
of the lens. Distortion is amazingly well controlled and, on the
chromatic aberration front, the lens is again remarkably well behaved
and at no point did the figures achieved give any cause for concern.’
‘Optically speaking, there is a clear winner in this test:
Sigma’s 50-500mm optic is something special and will deliver
excellent results right across its unusual focal range.’ |

Freelance Photographer - August/September 2007
‘With its hypersonic motor, auto focus is fast and quiet,
and the lens has full time manual focus capability. Overall the
lens impresses with its physical and optical quality, especially
at the price. ‘Ultimately, Sigma has delivered precisely what
you would expect from a lens….it delivers very good results,
very good build quality and functionality, at a very good price.
You simply cannot go wrong by adding this lens to your collection.’ |

Digital
Camera Buyer - Issue 64
‘Covering a range of 50-500mm, this 10x zoom picks up where
most kit lenses stop, going all the way to super-telephoto territory
- the equivalent of 800mm on a 35mm camera. By using a monopod,
you get to see what this lens can do, and it’s very impressive.
Optically, this is a very good lens with an astonishing range. |
