SIGMA's take on an entirely new system camera.
The world's smallest and lightest “pocketable full-frame” camera is here.

Design detail

Where to buy

The environment that surrounds shooting and art creation is undergoing radical changes. In this day and age when one user may have both a high-performance interchangeable lens camera and a smartphone camera, using them flexibly according to specific purposes and settings, SIGMA stopped and questioned the inherent value of a digital camera.

As a result, SIGMA set itself to develop a user-oriented digital camera that reflected the idea of “how a camera can be” in a more flexible and true-to-life manner, without conforming to manufacturers’ ideas of camera-centric categories and hierarchy.

Development Background

Deconstruction of digital camera.

Superior performance. A wide range of lenses to choose from. Possibilities for creating just the image you want with the highest quality. Full-frame interchangeable lens cameras have it all.

Extremely portable and can go anywhere you go. A sophisticated UI that is highly intuitive to use. With the quantum improvement in image quality achieved through advanced technology, smartphones have now solidified their position as the go-to everyday camera.

An open system that is highly customizable from a wide range of equipment. As the growing need for more pixels and higher resolution pushes towards large format cameras, increasingly more cinema cameras are becoming both more high-performance and scalable.

“Digital cameras” have thus become differentiated into different categories, within which they are becoming more optimized and advanced. In each category, individual models are put in order according to their respective highly specialized purposes and grades, and from there users choose one that suits their style and level: still or video, beginner or advanced, business or pleasure, and so on. In a way, cameras can be a symbol that signifies one’s attributes, social class, and orientations.

But should they? That was the question we wanted to ask ourselves again. In the real world, barriers between different genres such as videos and stills are decreasing, while the standards for image quality and usability are increasing for every category of camera. Also, it is becoming more and more common for one to have both a high-performance interchangeable lens camera and a smartphone camera, using them flexibly, without being strictly limited to one single purpose, for work or for fun.

Meanwhile, tools are not keeping up with the reality of “shooting” which keeps evolving. What we need is a camera that can meet unrecognized needs of real photographers and filmmakers, namely a “digital camera capable of adapting to the one who shoots” in a true sense. Starting with this belief, we set ourselves to break down the inherent value and challenges of the cameras as we knew them, extrapolate only the most essential aspects, put them under scrutiny, and build a camera from scratch.

Our goals were to combine the “smallest and lightest body possible” that you can take along with you wherever you go, to shoot whenever you want, with a “full-frame sensor” that makes it a perfect camera for serious occasions with without compromising on image quality, as well as to create something that is highly intuitive to use, is an “open and liberal system” that lets you to pair the camera with not only SIGMA lenses but also other lenses and accessories from other brands using a variety of attachments, and represents “ultimate versatility and scalability” that makes the camera adaptable to any scene and any need. We also strived for something that gives it “seamless shifts between shooting functions” that allow you to go from stills to videos and back with just one finger.

We wanted our new camera to have all of these all at once—no trade-offs, no either/or. To make this happen, we would have to pick and choose only the features and elements we needed for our purposes with absolutely no compromise, and use the latest technology available to raise the potential in image shooting and art creation. It was through this “pursuit of ideals,” the basic stance of SIGMA’s, that provided a basis for the creation of the SIGMA fp.

It’s a camera body that changes its shapes with great flexibility centered around the user.
It’s a tool that gives the user the joy of a new camera life that they themselves are yet to discover.
It’s a new system camera that will overturn the paradigm of “digital cameras.”

Scalable

Versatile scalability

An “open system” that allows one to pair the camera with not only SIGMA lenses but also other lenses and accessories, whether from SIGMA or other brands, using a variety of attachments, complete with “ultimate versatility and scalability” that makes the camera adaptable to any scenes.

Pocketable Full-frame

Impressive portability and power

The “smallest and lightest body possible” with which one can express their creative ideas whenever they want, combined with a “full-frame sensor” that is suitable for serious occasions without compromising on image quality, and “superb build quality” that makes the camera the perfect linchpin of a high-performance lens system.

Seamless

Full-fledged, liberating shooting functions

A “highly intuitive UI” that allows one to move between full-fledged still and video shooting modes with just one finger, making for a “seamless and truly creative tool” that goes beyond style and genre differences.

Making it a top priority to realize these three concepts all at once and without requiring any trade-offs,
SIGMA selected only the elements and mechanisms that were truly needed
with no compromise to create the SIGMA fp as the embodiment of an
“entirely new digital camera that SIGMA can offer to the world right now.”

Electronic shutter for a variety of settings

“Able to shoot whenever you want, wherever you want”―to realize this concept, the SIGMA fp incorporates a construction without a mechanical shutter for quiet shooting. This allows shooting without worrying about noise in a situation where one would have hesitated with a conventional camera because of its shutter sound. It gives no shutter shock even when shooting in quick succession at a frame rate of 18 frames/sec., eliminating even the tiniest shakes. In addition, the absence of a mechanical shutter, whose performance level can change through continuous operation, means that the SIGMA fp is a camera with improved reliability.

Superior options in artistic picture & video creations

The SIGMA fp is a frontrunner in incorporating functions that help exploring the photographic and cinematic creations. For instance, in addition to a number of different color modes, the SIGMA fp has newly introduced the “Teal and Orange” mode, inspired by the color grading technique commonly used in Hollywood films. Each mode has a slider that enables adjustment of the strength of the effects to apply, providing even greater control in one’s creations. The SIGMA fp is the first SIGMA camera to employ a tone curve adjustment function in addition to “Fill Light”, a special adjustment function of SIGMA Photo Pro, and they are both available in-camera. It has also newly introduced “TONE” and “COLOR” buttons for a quick access to each of the tone control and color mode menus. With these enhanced functions and a variety of operation elements, the SIGMA fp makes it simple and easy to create an image, in-camera with great details, be it still or video.

Advanced picture & video generating technologies

HDR shooting

Cinemagraph

The SIGMA fp employs a number of advanced technologies for image and video generation. The HDR shooting takes advantage of an electronic shutter to take multiple pictures of different exposures (3 frames for still photography and 2 frames for video) at once, which can then be merged into a single picture or video with a great dynamic range that could not have been achieved in normal shooting.
The Cinemagraph function, meanwhile, achieves a hybrid between still photography and video in the form of animated GIFs in which parts of a still image keep moving. With this function, the SIGMA fp is capable of creating Cinemagraphs in-camera.

Note: The HDR shooting in the Cine mode and the Cinemagraph function are to become available via firmware update scheduled at a later date.

Large heat sink

Designed and inspired by those used on professional cinema cameras, a large-size heat sink is mounted between the LCD and camera body. Combined with a heat dissipation coating applied to the outer surface, the SIGMA fp achieves highly effective heat dissipation. It prevents overheating at high temperatures or in long hours of use.

Same screw threads for strap fittings and tripod

The SIGMA fp is fitted with 1/4-inch threads for both the strap holder on either side of the body and a tripod. This provides greater freedom in how one use the camera, from mounting it on a tripod in portrait orientation with the fixing removed, to attaching a strap for use in portrait orientation after screwing the fixing into the hole on the base.

Electronic shutter for a variety of settings

Full-time electronic shutter

Shutter shock, sound, and lags: these are disadvantages of mechanical shutters. The SIGMA fp is designed to minimize them in pursuit of a system to adapt to a variety of different shooting scenes. Shooting that requires precision where even the tiniest shake is to be eliminated; shooting without ruining the ambience of the scene; and shooting with good response, without missing the perfect shot. These types of shooting will open new horizons in video creation.
Furthermore, the absence of a mechanical shutter makes the SIGMA fp’s camera structure simpler, which in turn improves its reliability as a camera.

Superior options in artistic picture & video creations

Standard

Teal and Orange

Color mode “Teal and Orange”

Color grading is a process of altering the color of a video and is an important step in filmmaking that will change the “mood” of a film or other types of work significantly. One color grade style that has been widely used in Hollywood films has inspired a new color mode introduced in the SIGMA fp, called “Teal and Orange.”
This new color mode is about creating high contrast between orange colors, which are found in human skin tones, and teals (cyan blue), which are their complement, for visuals that are highly vibrant and deeply dramatic.
It can be used in both the Still mode and Cine mode.

Fill Light

A function formerly available only in SIGMA Photo Pro, SIGMA’s proprietary image development software, Fill Light has now been incorporated into the body of SIGMA fp. Using Fill Light allows adjustment of the brightness of an image by adding extra light energy into the shadow regions without altering the exposure of highlight regions. This provides greater control in producing an image with great details, even with areas that are hard to control using the exposure adjustment settings.
The adjustment range, which was formerly ±2.0, has been expanded to ±5.0, making it possible to fine-tune the brightness even more.

Tone Control & Color mode

The Tone Control menu now has a manual setting option in addition to the two auto options available in previous models (Strong/Mild), which allows users to adjust the tone curve by themselves.
The SIGMA fp is also the first SIGMA camera to come with an “effect” slider in its color mode menu. It can be used to set the strength of an effect to apply in 11 levels, from -5 to +5, which enables the fine-tune of the color mode.
It has also newly introduced “TONE” and “COLOR” buttons for a quick access to the tone control and color mode menus. With these enhancd functions and a variety of operation elements, the SIGMA fp makes it simple and easy to create an image, in-camera with great details, be it still or video.

HDR shooting

The HDR shooting takes advantage of an electronic shutter to take multiple pictures of different exposures (3 frames for still photography and 2 frames for video) at once, which can then be merged into a single picture or video with a great dynamic range that could not have been achieved in normal shooting.

Note: The HDR shooting in the Cine mode is to become available via firmware update scheduled at a later date.

Face/Eye Detection AF

The Face/Eye Detection AF function allows the SIGMA fp to focus automatically on the eyes of a human subject. It can bring the eyes of the model into focus instantly and precisely, even when shooting portraits using a large-diameter lens with a shallow depth of field.

Cinemagraph

SIGMA fp comes with a feature to make “Cinemagraphs”, which are animated GIFs that are a hybrid between still photography and video. With this function, the SIGMA fp is capable of creating unique imagery, where parts of a still image keep moving, in-camera.

Note: The photo is for illustrative purposes only. The Cinemagraph function is to become available via firmware update scheduled at a later date.

Focus peaking

The focus peaking function highlights the edges of the parts of a scene that are in focus in a particular color. It is designed to help focusing the lens manually.

The SIGMA fp uses the L-Mount, characterized by a short flange focal length, large diameter, and superior durability.
Thanks to the L-Mount Alliance, L-Mount lenses from Leica Camera AG and Panasonic Corporation can also be used on the SIGMA fp, realizing a camera system with great scalability.
Furthermore, SIGMA SA mount lenses designed for previous lines of SIGMA cameras from one’s lens investment on the L-Mount by applying the SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-21.

* The L-Mount Trademark is a registered Trademark of Leica Camera AG.

Independent UIs

Going instantly from the Still mode to the Cine mode at the touch of a switch. Each mode comes with a dedicated control system and screen display, making it possible to check information and displays on the screen that is necessary for specific scenes.

LCD screen

The 3.15-inch (3:2) liquid-crystal display is complete with a touch screen, for intuitive operation.

Large heat sink

Designed and inspired by those used on professional cinema cameras, a large-size magnesium heat sink is mounted between the LCD and camera body. This achieves highly effective heat dissipation and prevents overheating at high temperatures or in long hours of use.

QS button

Camera functions that one use most often can be allocated to the Quick Set menu, complete with the QS (Quick Set) button to access the menu.

TONE button

This button gives a quick access to the Tone Control menu.

COLOR button

This button gives a quick access to the Color Mode menu.

No low-pass filter

Because the SIGMA fp does not have a low-pass filter, it is able to capture images without losing the resolution of the sensor.

Dust- & splash-proof structure

The SIGMA fp is protected with the dust- and splash-proof sealing on a total of 42 points over the camera’s body. When combined with a dust- and splash-proof lens, the SIGMA fp will be ready for shooting in any environments.

Aluminum body

A body covered with die-cast aluminum on the front and the back ensures superior robustness and heat dissipation while keeping the body weight light.

External power supply

By using a DC connector (CN-21) (sold separately), the SIGMA fp can be powered from an AC power adaptor or a V-mount battery plate.

Full-time electronic shutter

The SIGMA fp employs a full-time electronic shutter, enabling to shoot virtually without sound, and no camera shake due to shutter shock. Even when shooting in quick succession at a frame rate of 18 frames/sec., it eliminates the tiniest of shakes. In addition, as opposed to conventional mechanical shutters, it does not cause irregularities on the screen display in a high-speed shutter setting.
Furthermore, the absence of a mechanical shutter makes the SIGMA fp’s camera structure simpler, which in turn improves its reliability as a camera.

New lenses specially designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras

SIGMA announced three new lenses that are designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras:
45mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary
35mm F1.2 DG DN | Art
14-24mm F2.8 DG DN | Art

Large choice of dedicated accessories

The SIGMA fp is complemented by a wide choice of dedicated accessories, expanding the possibilities of how one use the camera.

Photography function

High-precision AF

The SIGMA fp employs high-precision contrast AF, available in three modes: Single AF, Continuous AF, and Manual Focus.
There are 49 AF points to choose from, as well as Free Movement mode, and tracking AF modes.

Face/Eye Priority AF

In addition to Face Priority, the SIGMA fp also has Eye Priority AF. The camera will automatically detect the eyes of a human subject, allows bringing them into focus instantly and precisely.

Low light AF

The SIGMA fp incorporates the low light AF, which enables AF to work even in a low light condition.

Electronic image stabilization

Comes with the electronic image stabilization (EIS) function. Taking advantage of the electronic shutter, the SIGMA fp is capable of instantaneously taking three frames, comparing them, and creating a composite image into a still image or video with minimum blur.

Enhanced ISO

The SIGMA fp’s native ISO settings range between 100 and 25600. With the enhanced ISO settings, an even larger choice of sensitivity with ISO 6, 12, 25, 50, 51200 and 102400 is available.

ISO Auto

In ISO Auto mode, the lower and upper limit of the ISO range can be set at will.

Flicker-free shooting

The SIGMA fp detects and controls image flickering, a phenomenon that can occur when shooting with artificial light sources.

Large choice of color modes

The SIGMA fp offers as many as 12 different color modes.
Color modes available: Standard; Vivid; Neutral; Portrait; Landscape; Monochrome; Cinema; Teal and Orange; Sunset Red; Forest Green; FOV Classic Blue; FOV Classic Yellow

Color mode adjustment

The SIGMA fp offers a selection of color modes, where color tone and contrast tuned to best suit different shooting scenes.
It has also newly introduced the “effect” slider to its adjustment menu. It sets the strength of an effect to apply in 11 levels, from -5 to +5, enabling the fine-tune for the color mode effects.

Tone control

Optimizes a tone curve to adjust an image with natural tones even in a high contrast scene.
In addition to the two already available options (Strong/Mild), a manual setting option has newly been introduced, which allows users to adjust the tone curve by themselves.

HDR shooting

Taking advantage of an electronic shutter to take multiple pictures of different exposures (3 frames for still photography and 2 frames for video) at once, which can then be merged into a single picture or video with a great dynamic range and a natural look, all in-camerea.

* The HDR shooting in the Cine mode is to become available via firmware update scheduled at a later date.

Fill Light

The SIGMA fp has within its body a “Fill Light” function, which is useful to adjust the brightness of an image by adding extra light energy into the shadow regions without altering the exposure of highlighted regions. The adjustment range, which was formerly ±2.0, has been expanded to ±5.0, making it possible to fine-tune the brightness even more.

Cinemagraph

The SIGMA fp can be used to create cinemagraphs in-camera, which are animated GIFs, in which parts of a still image keep moving (Length of up to 5 seconds).

Note: The Cinemagraph function is to become available via firmware update scheduled at a later date.

Focus peaking

The focus peaking function highlights the edges of the parts of the scene that are in focus in a color (of the choice from among 4colors). It quickly identifies which parts of the subject are in focus.

Multi-aspect

The SIGMA fp has a wide range of aspect ratios to choose from. With the newly introduced “A size” mode, it shoots in √2:1, which is the A size standards.
Aspect ratios available: [21:9] / [16:9] / [3:2] / [A size (√2:1)] / [4:3] / [7:6] / [1:1]

APS-C crop

When using one of DC lenses (SIGMA’s APS-C lenses), the SIGMA fp has the option of cropping the shots automatically to the APS-C angle of view.
