A stunning wide-standard prime offering professional performance in a compact body.
The SIGMA I series introduces compact, beautifully designed, high-performance optics for mirrorless camera systems. In its first collection, SIGMA introduces a versatile 35mm prime lens to the Contemporary line-up, which combines excellent resolving power with a small body that is perfectly weighted for mirrorless systems.
This all-new I series model is portable enough to be carried around in a small kitbag for day-to-day shooting, but owing to its outstanding optical design, impressive build quality, F2 aperture and smooth focus drive system with a quiet and fast stepping motor, it is equally well-suited to heavy professional use. The lens is ideal for street and astro photography, environmental portraits, weddings and video. It is designed for photographers and film makers who value the experience of taking a picture just as much as the quality of the final result.
New standards of optical performance for the Contemporary line
Despite its small size, no compromise has been made on the optical performance of the SIGMA I series 24mm F3.5 DG DN | Contemporary. It is capable of capturing the finest details when shooting on high resolution full-frame cameras, and it does so across the entire frame, which means photographers can rely on edge-to-edge sharpness at all apertures when shooting wide-angle scenes.
The 35mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary brings to the table the highest level of optical performance even at its maximum aperture of F2. Axial chromatic aberration, a point of particular concern with a bright lens, is corrected with SLD glass. The placement of high-refractive index elements provides effective correction of various types of aberration, while keeping the amount of glass used to a minimum.
The use of three high-precision glass-molded aspherical lenses was made possible thanks to advanced production technology at the Aizu factory, SIGMA’s only production site. These elements provide correction of spherical aberration and field curvature, and the fluctuation of aberration at the time of focusing. The lens design also provides a very good correction of sagittal coma aberration, making it capable of capturing details fine enough for it to be used for night sky photography.
Thanks to SIGMA’s cutting-edge optical design and advanced processing technology, the 35mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary offers consistent, high resolving power right across the frame.
The lens renders very attractive bokeh, and out-of-focus highlights are near-circular, even at the edges of the frame.

Stunning optics with minimal flare and ghosting
The 35mm F2 DG DN uses exceptionally high quality, high refractive index glass, including three precision moulded aspherical elements and one SLD element, in order to keep images pin sharp and flare and ghosting to a minimum. This ensures very bright points of light remain well-controlled. Image: Takashi Shikano

Ultra-high lens resolution for capturing very fine detail
Thanks to SIGMA’s cutting-edge optical design and advanced processing technology, the 35mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary offers consistent, high resolving power right across the frame. In this image, taken at F2, details remain pin sharp even viewed extremely close-up. Image: Takashi Shikano

Introducing a new photographic experience for mirrorless users
The SIGMA I series features full-frame-compatible lenses that offer mirrorless users a new and better alternative, both in the experience of shooting with the lens and in the impressive results it is able to achieve. One of the key advantages of mirrorless cameras is their smaller form-factor, and this new 35mm optic is designed to be perfectly matched to these more compact systems without sacrificing performance. This combination of superb optical quality with exceptional portability, not previously possible with DSLR systems, will bring new opportunities to this and future generations of photographers.
Simultaneously, SIGMA is aware that, in this day and age when we have such huge diversity when it comes to what we use to photograph, as represented by smartphones, people look for something more than a mere act of taking pictures when they choose to own a camera and lenses. SIGMA’s excellence in development and processing technologies has been built up since its founding in 1961, and has become further sophisticated with the introduction of the SIGMA Global Vision range in 2012. With this as a base, SIGMA has given careful thought to how photographers use and enjoy their lenses, including optical design, advanced functionality, superb build quality and the experience of picking up and using the lens, and with all of this carefully considered, the I series was born.
Outstanding build quality for a better user experience
Sigma is now one of the very few imaging manufacturers whose products are solely made in Japan. This gives us full control over our production processes and helps us maintain the highest levels of quality control over the design, manufacture and construction of every product. Great care is taken to ensure the highest quality materials are chosen.
All I series lenses are designed with an all-metal barrel. The precision-cut aluminium parts not only give the lens a sleek, stylish finish but provide superb durability, which improves the quality of the entire product. Metal materials are also used in internal structures that slide with the operation ring for added robustness. These high-precision components, crafted with Sigma’s cutting-edge metalworking technology, are also used in the production of the cine lens line-up for professional film-makers.
The lens has an aperture ring ① so that users can change aperture using either the lens or the camera. Great attention was paid to ensure the click is well-define but not too sharp. Sound-deadening grease has been used to create a more rounded sound and smooth action. Similarly the metal focus ring is perfectly weighted for a precise and smooth action to ensure accurate manual focus control. The ‘knurling’ grooves cut into both rings improve slip resistance ②.
As on the I series 65mm F2 DG DN, the cover ring between the focus ring and the aperture ring has brushed metal effect similar to the finish on the rear cylinder of the Art lens line. This functions as a finger grip when attaching or detaching the lens ③.

Magnetic metal lens cap and metal lens hood
The 35mm F2 DG DN | C comes with a carefully machined metal lens hood, a feature not even found on Sigma’s Art series lenses. A large number of grooves called ‘knurling’ are cut in, improving the lens operation by serving as slip resistance and giving the lens a premium look and feel unique to the I Series. A specially chosen plastic was used for the part that connects to the lens to ensure smooth operation.
Included in the box is the regular Sigma plastic lens cap as well as an all-metal magnetic cap (pictured left), which snaps firmly on to the end of the lens. With no requirement for a spring-loaded clasp, the cap has a sleek, minimal finish.
Optional magnetic lens cap holder with carabiner
Available to buy separately is a new lens cap holder, onto which the magnetic metal lens cap can be quickly and easily attached when the lens is in use. This keeps the cap within easy reach and makes it less likely to get lost. Plus, its elegant design is a stylish addition to a photographer’s equipment.
The holder comes with a carabiner so that it can be attached to clothing or a bag strap.

Essentials
You'll find our philosophy and craftsmanship in every product
Our new lineup fully expresses our approach to lenses and photography itself. All of our lenses belong to one of three lines—Contemporary, Art, or Sports—all of which share our development philosophy and advanced manufacturing system. High performance, high quality, and high end in every respect, these lenses give people who love photography lasting value and consistent, exciting results. The secret is our passion for craftsmanship that we put into every production process and every product.
Evaluation with Sigma's own MTF measuring system “A1”
We used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM will all be checked using this “A1” before they are shipped.
