APO 300mm F2.8 EX DG HSM

Fast maximum aperture F2.8 telephoto lens optimized for digital SLR cameras

The new multi layer lens coating reduces flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital SLR cameras. ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements reduce chromatic aberration to a minimum and also ensure sharp, quality images of high contrast. It creates an excellent image quality with 35mm film SLR cameras as well as digital SLR cameras.

Minimizing Flare and Ghost

This new lens has a special coating to reduce internal reflection and minimize flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance.

Excellent image quality with ELD glass elements

This lens uses two ELD glass elements reduce chromatic aberration to a minimum and also ensure sharp, quality images of high contrast.

Rear Filter

It also features a drop-in 46mm filter holder in the rear part of the lens barrel, which can be rotated to facilitate the use of filters, including a polarizing filter.

HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor)

The HSM models (Sigma, Nikon and Canon mounts) provide fast, silent AF function as well as full- time manual focus override.

Inner Focusing System

It also incorporates inner focusing system, which enables responsive and fast auto focus speed. The overall length of the lens does not change during focusing, ensuring convenient handling and ease of use.

Optional APO Tele-Converter EX

Simply adding an APO teleconverter (optional extra), means that this lens can be used as a 420mm F4 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or a 600mm F5.6 AF ultra-telephoto lens with a 2X teleconverter.

In the news

‘The engineering is the high standard we have come to expect from Sigma. A nice touch is the provision of a deeper lens hood extension for users with APS-C size chips – handy if you are the owner of both formats. One thing the lens taught us is that the narrow zone of an image that is in focus is bitingly sharp and would often need a bit of softening work on skin to remain flattering!’

‘Being part of Sigma’s EX range, the lens is designed to withstand the rigours of professional use, and the build quality is certainly very impressive. The focus ring is one of the best I have used; it is well damped and very smooth, allowing accurate adjustments to be made with one finger.’ ‘When it came to the processing stage I was initially struck by the quality of the images. Colour balance was neutral and contrast was high, so only slight adjustments were needed to the raw files.’ ‘For sports and wildlife photographers who are looking for a fast telephoto lens for action photography, the Sigma 33mm f/2.8 would make an ideal companion.’

‘At f/2.8 it is a fast telephoto that manages to compete with some serious rivals. Excellent flat-line performance is what we would expect from a prime lens and this 300mm is no disappointment. Edge results stay admirably close to the centre performance too. Two extra low dispersion glass elements help control chromatic aberration and ensure high contrast images while distortion, as you would expect from a lens of this nature, is virtually immeasurable. A serious contender up against its marque rivals.’

‘This lens feels very comfortable for something so big. It looks and feels beautifully made and is fantastically fast and quiet when focusing. My pictures really proved the advantage of the super fast f/2.8 maximum aperture.’

‘As is often the case with Sigma products, a lot of thought has gone into this lens. Overall this is a very nice lens that offers a bright viewfinder and excellent image quality, with a clever added extra in the form of its dual-format lens hood.’

‘Sigma have created a real gem here. This 85mm f/1.4 is a relatively affordable wide aperture telephoto lens that is capable of producing superb results. The lens handles well, feels very well put together and costs hundreds of pounds less than manufacturer’s own equivalent lenses.’

‘Released in the early part of 2010, Sigma’s 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM might seem significantly more expensive than its rivals, but it’s one of the most competitively priced 85mm f/1.4 lenses on the market to feature full AF/MF workings and a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) to keep AF operation as quiet and quick as possible. The focus ring is big, offers a pleasing resistance and is easy to locate from behind the camera, just like the prominent MF/AF switch.’

‘Over the past half a year I’ve put this Sigma lens through its paces – thoroughly – and I’m happy to confirm that it’s an absolute gem. For £700 it’s a bargain. The focal length for tight headshots is superb as there is never any hint of distortion, despite being a couple of metres from the subject.’

‘As part of Sigma’s professional EX range, the build quality is excellent. It has a metal body, a rubberised focus ring with smooth action and constant physical length during focussing. Sigma optic offers impressively fast autofocus that is faster than even the significantly more expensive Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM. The Sigma lens has the sharpest image quality and offers the widest aperture and autofocus’

‘‘Weight aside, this Sigma feels good in the hand and is well-made, with a large and comfortable focus ring. It is an able performer with centre sharpness.’

‘Sharpness and contrast  are both pretty good. Manual focusing is very precise and images quality is pretty good.’
