The SIGMA Foveon Digital Camera systems are still some of the best image quality to money ratio you can buy. I couldn’t have been happier with my DP3M and being honest it’s the best bit of photography equipment I’ve ever bought. Now I have the SIGMA dp3 Quattro I have a camera that can deliver higher detail with a different more natural look over the previous model, all this in a camera body that not only offers improved ergonomics but is faster with better battery life.
I wasn’t really sure what to think about the Foveon cameras before I got one, almost every image out there is shot on a Bayer sensor so you build up this notion that it’s simply how a digital file is to be. However when you use a SIGMA Foveon camera and view the image on your computer screen for the first time it really is a “wow” moment! The first time I used a SIGMA DP3 Merrill, I was so blown away with the image file that I thought there must be something wrong with my DSLR and tested it with several lens only to determine why it was so different. But it is simply that the Foveon camera is that good.
The image quality is simply outstanding and the lenses on the SIGMA cameras are amazing. Every time I open a SIGMA file on my big screen I get a smile on my face. There’s just something magical about the per pixel sharpness, the way depth of field transitions are handled (they seem to keep more detail), the general 3d look of the files and the wonderful leaf shutter which opens up more creative options when using strobes/flash on location.
The SIGMA DP Merrill’s and the SIGMA dp Quattro’s have since become my go-to photographic tools that have given me new inspirations in my creative work. However sometimes it takes a gathering of other like-minded creative people to come together and inspire one another to create something magical. Such as this YouTube video titled Aranel Autumn which features images from the SIGMA DP1 Merrill and the SIGMA dp3 Quattro and was produced with the help of Aranel Cosplay and Barry Grant.
