Notting Hill Carnival is Europe’s largest street festival drawing crowds of up to 2.5 million people over a 2 day weekend; it’s been going since the 60s and celebrates Caribbean culture in London.

The first carnival I attended was in 2004 when I was 14; my uncle took me as well as my younger brother and sister. I just remember being shocked by the amount of people, it was the first time I felt so small in the big city but also the moment I realised I loved being surrounded by people, the chaos and noise, so much happening at the same time.

Fast forward 10 years and 2014 was my second year attending but this time I’d developed an interest in photography. I decided that year to embark on a project documenting Notting Hill carnival for 10 years in the hopes of making a book at the end.

The SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art lens helped me to capture this year’s carnival, which is my 5th year of the project.

It’s my preferred focal length to shoot with. Even though it’s been 3 years since I’ve had a 50mm, this was like reuniting with an old trusted friend. The SIGMA 50mm | Art is amazing, it captured light so cinematically. And we had great weather over the weekend to see what this lens could do. I’m most surprised by the image quality, there are photos I kept zooming in on while I was editing and the level of detail in the pictures blew me away. It’s not just quality, I was also very impressed with the focusing speed. If there’s one thing you need during a carnival parade is to be quick, Notting Hill carnival is so fast pace, blink and you’ll miss it”
