From 14mm to 200mm, the SIGMA F2.8 Pro Trio has it covered! by photographer Lea Tippett

In September 2018 I travelled to Assynt in the North West Highlands of Scotland with other SIGMA Camera ambassadors and took the SIGMA 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art lens with me on the adventure. It was my first use of the lens to photograph the stunning Assynt landscape and I instantly fell in love with the superb sharpness and crispness.

I had paired this lens with my SIGMA sd Quattro H camera and also brought along my trusted SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art lens. Having the two F2.8 fast aperture zoom lenses of professional quality in my kit bag enabled me to cover much of the Assynt landscape which I was photographing. I had two excellent lenses that I could depend on without any compromise but I needed to complete my focal range options by including a longer telephoto zoom lens. That day came recently when I took delivery of the new SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Sports lens.

Having the SIGMA F2.8 Pro Trio set of lenses in my kit bag gives me the advantage of capturing the exact area of the scene I want to capture with my choice of focal range from 14mm to 200mm. The F2.8 aperture also is an advantage since most of my landscape photography is taken around sunrise and sunset when there are low light conditions. It’s essential that there is enough light entering the camera to ensure accurate focusing, metering and composition. All three of these lenses offer a bright F2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range resulting in fast and accurate focusing without the worry of the lens hunting for the correct focus. Plus I often photograph long exposures during the day using either a 6 stop or 10 stop neutral density filters. Using these fast aperture lenses enables me to focus accurately with the filters attached and saves me from the hassle of having to focus, and then attach the filter. Focusing on the filters attached also greatly reduces the risk of the focusing position moving and ruining the capture.

As a landscape photographer, I’m also quite demanding on my gear and I need a kit that will be able to cope with most things that Mother Nature can throw at it. The build qualities of the SIGMA F2.8 Pro Trio lenses are superb and the lenses are all weather sealed which fills me with confidence when I’m working in wet and windy conditions. You are instantly aware of the excellent quality and craftsmanship that has been put into the manufacturing of a Sigma Global Vision lens as soon as you handle one. As an engineer myself I can appreciate the precision that is put into each and every one of these lenses which are evident in their astonishing optical quality.

The SIGMA 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art lens is my favourite of the trio and in my experience, I have never used a better lens. It has wonderful contrast and incredible sharpness across the frame and at every focal range. Chromatic aberration is extremely rare and distortion is virtually zero.

The SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art lens is a great multi-purpose lens that can be used in a variety of situations. It is so versatile and reliable that many find it is the lens that can be used most often.

The SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Sports lens is a fantastic telephoto lens to use for those extended distance landscape images. It also offers more custom features to allow the lens to work specifically for your style of photography. Two custom switches enable the user to quickly switch between custom settings that are previously set up by connecting the lens via the SIGMA USB Dock to the SIGMA Optimisation Pro software. A very intuitive program giving users the freedom to customize the lens to adjust the focus position, the focus limiter and optical stabilisation along with the speed of the AF motor.

The images I have captured with the SIGMA f2.8 Pro Trio are superb and just as I have come to expect from Sigma’s Global Vision product range. I now feel I have three pro-grade lenses in my kit bag that will deliver striking image quality, time and time again, with no gaps in focal length from 14mm up to 200mm. These three Sigma Global Vision lenses are firm favourites of mine and are always in my kit bag as they always deliver stellar results.
