Sigma Mini Zoom 24-70 ƒ3.5-5.6 Aspherical
Launched 1994

In the mid 1990s the SLR market was still incredibly healthy at all ends of the spectrum, and as such the Mini Zoom 24-70 Aspherical was made available in both AF and MF mounts. The extra 4mm for this now standard focal length came with a price in terms of tele aperture, but the light weight and small dimensions were a bonus for many users.

The original press release for this September 1994 release:

“The new SIGMA mini zoom 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 aspherical is a light weight and compact lens. Incorporating 4 groups zooming system and an aspherical lens element, the lens has superb optical quality. The lens has the matte ‘Zen’ finish like other SIGMA lenses.

The new lens will be available in AF and MF mounts for most major SLR cameras from September 9th 1994 on.”

CZ Scientific – importers during this period – issued something more concise:

“The Sigma Research and Development department is working flat out. As well as producing several exciting new lenses, a zoom compact camera and a brand new autofocus SLR for Photokina, they have managed to launch their latest wide angle zoom lens before the international photographic exhibition.

The 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 zoom lens has a 4 group zooming system which, by incorporating an aspherical lens, achieves excellent image definition throughout both the wide angle and telephoto extremes of the lens.

Sigma have created an incredibly compact (just 2.5 inches in overall length) and lightweight zen finished lens which still gives a versatile performance covering 35° (at 70mm) to a very useful 84° (at 24mm).

The retail prices of £179.95 for MF, MAF and NAF and £199.95 for SAF and CAF when combined with the free matched lens hood and 3 year guarantee make this a very hard act to follow”
